This train the trainers course will teach you the Art of Conscious Dying into the Light so you, in turn, can develop your own program to teach others to be Transition Guides for their clients, patients, family members or friends. This course will benefit you and enhance your work if you are:

• a nursing educator in a Thanatology degree program or end-of-life continuing education program
• a healthcare educator in an assisted-living or long term care facility
• a CEU course developer of caregiver or nursing courses
• an alternative healthcare practitioner offering complementary services (yoga, meditation, hypnotherapy, massage, reiki, light/energy healing)
• a hospice trainer teaching volunteers or continuing education classes for nurses, aides or community educational classes for families
• a community educator offering end-of-life care classes
• a life coach helping clients overcome fear and grief
• a minister counseling caregivers and terminally ill members

The curriculum is designed as a 6-week Self-Study course consisting of reading chapters in the training manual and practicing the relaxation and guided imagery exercises, practice CDs included. A CD with the author reading the manual is provided for those who prefer an audio version. There is a recommended reading list and a list of internet resources available to help you broaden your knowledge.

Our openness about my illness has allowed so many channels of communication to blossom. My friends and colleagues have told me that dying isn't usually like that, more a sad and slow withdrawal from life with loss the dominant theme. In our society people get medicalised and pitied and feared and isolated when they are dying. They have so much to offer if we can just accept it as a time of specialness and privilege. One friend commented that what we really need are midwives for dying. The essential elements of particular skills of companionship, passage, and journey with a prescribed endpoint mirror each other in birth and death.

Pre-training Suggestions

These are things you can do to better prepare yourself for this work. These will give you more depth as a Transition Guide Trainer.

1. Enroll in a hospice training course for volunteers and spend time with dying patients
2. Volunteer at a nursing home to visit/sit with elderly patients
3. Take classes in meditation and yoga (these will help you when you teach others and be beneficial to your own spiritual growth)
4. Have a few sessions with a hypnotherapist who uses guided imagery
5. Do some personal growth work to heal your own wounds and figure out who you are
6. Do your own forgiveness and gratitude work
7. Deal with your own issues with grief and bereavement
8. Begin purchasing books on the Recommended Reading List for a reference library
9. Start reading the books on the Recommended Reading List and reading web sites listed in Recommended Links

There are many other good books I could have added to the list but I had to draw the line somewhere so if anyone has a particular favorite they think is a must read for Transition Guides, let me know. The same goes for web sites for the list of Online Resources. These lists will be dynamic so students can check back to see what new books and web sites have been added since their last visit. As a nondenominational program, I have not included the Bible, the Koran, or other religious books; this is an individual's choice whether to use. The list is broken down into four categories: Textbooks; Background Information; Death, Dying & the After Life; Reference Books. I suggest that anyone interested in this field read all of them and keep a good many of them in your personal library for reference and to share with clients/patients. You won't be required to purchase the textbooks but I highly recommend that you do as they will continue to be helpful to your teaching for years to come.
